もうすぐ１０月。本格的なノースショアのサーフィンシーズンを目の前に、今日は、サーフィンワックスのお話をさせていただきます。
The surf season of North Shore is almost there. Therefore, let me talk about one of the important tools of our fun surf sessions….. A WAX!
まずは、ワックスの必要性から。。。
Why we need wax?
今やファイバーグラスでサポートされていてツルツルに光るサーフボード。なぜツルツルなのか？理由は波（水面）と板との摩擦を最小限にするためです。摩擦が少なければ少ないほどスピードが出る。スピードが出れば様々な技が可能になってくるだけでなはなく、風を切る感覚がより心地よくなる。実は昔、サーフボードが木で出来ていた頃からその工夫はなされていて、ククイナッツのオイルを塗ったり、できるだけツルツルになる様に仕上げていました。
When you see the surfboard on the store board rack, do you notice, all the boards are shining!! Because of the fiberglass coating. Less friction, more speed. Less friction between the water and boards give more speed for surfing. Even Early on the history of surfing when the boards were made with wood, Hawaiians were supplying Kukui nut oil to make less friction.
ツルツルでスピードは出るけれども、ツルツルで困るのは、滑って転んでしまうこと。板だけが波に乗っても意味はない。サーファーがしっかり板に立ってられてこそ、サーフィンです（笑）
Although if the board is slippery, you are not able to stand up. Maybe you can, but it’s going to be very hard to keep standing up on the board.
そこでサーファーが立つ側にワックスを塗るんです。スキーだと滑る様に雪と接する側にワックスを塗るんですが、サーフィンが逆。足が滑らない様に、滑り止め用にワックスを塗る。
That is why you need to use wax. Instead, skiers put wax on the bottom of boards to make less friction with snow, surfers put wax on the top of boards to make more friction with their feet.
ワックスの歴史を掘ってみると、ひと昔前は、キャンドルのワックスをとかしてボードにつけていた時代があったそうです。そして６０年代のワイキキビーチボーイズが元気だった頃、彼らはそれに油を混ぜて、塗りやすく改良したそうです。
Do you know? Early on the history of surfing, surfers were using candle waxes for that. Then in 60’s, it has been discovered that addition of oil to allow to make softer surf wax.
今はとても便利になりました。こうやって塗りやすくしかもリーズナブルな価格のワックスが、簡単にお店で手に入るのですから。
